Purebred or Mutt??

You say you're part what??
We are starting our second day of the 24 Paws Participation Week, by asking a dog-related question to get to know you better.  Sorry we missed everyone yesterday as we had a minor plumbing mishap that kept us away.

Before we start, I'd like to comment on Monday's question:  Puppies or Adult Dogs?  I was quite surprise by the number of people who were like me and aren't as enthusiastic about the puppy stage as I would have thought.  I was certain I would be a lone pup out there when I shared that bit of myself.  So nice that I wasn't the only one who feels that way.

OK, on with our second question:  we want to know which do you prefer, purebred dogs or mutts?

Part Kangaroo?
Personally I’m a mutt girl.  There are different reasons, but I think it really comes down to the artist in me who loves the unique creations that come from mixed breeds.  I know there are some that don’t agree with that and feel dogs should stay true to form, but I have always found myself being drawn to those special blends.  There’s just something about them I think that adds to their mystery and personality by not following the traditions of what a dog should be.

I remember as a kid studying about different breeds of dogs and there wasn't really one that stuck out for me, I liked a little bit of everything about each breed.

Yet, I have a three exceptions:  Great Danes, Bloodhounds and my husband‘s dream of a St. Bernard..  If we ever came to the decision to get one of these dogs, I would without a doubt get a purebred.

Overall though I like that mixed basket and being part of several dogs at once.  Our dogs never cease to amaze me the way they draw on a conglomerate of temperaments, behaviors and instincts of the different breeds within them and I guess I find myself relating to the different parts in myself with them.  I find that pretty cool.  Which I guess based on that theory when I do get my Great Dane, I should have myself all together by that time, right?  BOL!!

So what about you? Do you like a standard breed or do you like that crazy mixed up mutt that makes your company play guessing games every time they are over?

Part Gopher??  Oh, brother!

Dear friends,

Sorry for not dropping in awhile :) I've been busy working (helping mom) thus kind of forgot to update my blog. Glad to know all of you still a happy-go-lucky pups!

I might not be able to post as often as before so please head over to my newest post and leave a comment so I could add you on mom's new site. With this we could still keep in contact and it'll easier for me to drop by often to your page :)

p/s: I love both purebreds and mutts but I have to admit that mutt is one great dogs! Sometimes they could even outshine purebreds :) and what coincidence, our latest issue of magazine featured about mutt and their good traits :)

Love,
Autumn & Jasmine

Mutts makes great doggies ! Though this time around I got a Schnauzer after 4 mutts to ensure that I'll end up with a small sized dog =)

This is a very hard question!! My big guy...was part newf and part lab....we lost him a couple of years ago, but he was very special to us! VERY special!! We love our bichons too so I guess the answer would be BOTH!!

My family were confirmed mutt owners.... until they discovered greyhound! They'd only ever have rescue dogs though. Deccy x

I'm a mutt person as purebreds are extremely expensive where I live. Still, and I just love how they're capable of adapting to whichever environment they're placed on.

Imagine not having to be concerned of stomach sensitivity when changing from one dog food to another. Or not having to worry about breed issues because most of these guys have dads or moms that have battled the elements and survived the outside world without human assistance.

Speaking of which, there are some particular mixed breeds that just looks so adorable, such as JRTs mixed with other small breeds, a dachshund and a black labrador, a golden retriever and a poodle, and one of my latest I've seen would be a yorkie and a shih-tzu mix.

I prefer to start with a young dog but not a puppy.

I love all dogs, it's nice to have the kind where people know excactly what it is without asking...but I choose my dog with my heart, style doesn't matter.

We love all dogs,BUT we really LOVE mutts. I am rather large for a yorkie so we suspect I might be mixed with something else.

Most of the dogs that I've known have been mutts. Notable exceptions: my best friend in high school's Rottweiler, and my aunts Pug.

When my fiance and I were having the "what kind of dog?"discussion, I was pulling for Rottweiler and he wanted a Boxer. Neither of us wanted the other's dog, and we came do Doberman.

My "objection" to mutts? Their health and longevity is a big question mark. Best case scenario, if you go with a pure breed, you end up with a breeder who has done all he or she can to ensure the best health and longest life in the line that they are breeding. Obviously, looking at many of the extreme breeds out there, this doesn't always happen. Maybe health testing is just an illusion, because really, any life is a crapshoot.

Also, bloodhound puppies? I wish they stayed puppies forever so I could lovingly smoosh their faces. As adults, they're more jowly and drooly than I like, unfortunately.

Is couch potato a breed? It really doesn't matter to me whether a dog is a mutt or a pure bred. Personality, age and relative healthiness are what's important to me. That being said, my first two dogs were pure breds and all the rest have been mutts and I loved them all.

Oh no plumbing problems??? My hubby is a plumber! Too bad we didn't live closer to each other:) Hope everything got fixed!

I guess my answer is obvious, standard breed. It's always been that way, but I have nothing against mutts, any dog is great and I think you never know what you are going to get either way! Look at how different my 2 are!

I have never met a dog I didn't fall in love with, but for the most part, I like mutts for the reasons you stated.

However, I've had pure bred Siberian Huskies, a breed I've always been partial to, and if I were to get another one, he/she would be a purebred.

Border Collie is the other breed I would rather have a purebred over a mixed breed. Although, my dog Keikei is a Borador which is a Border Collie/Lab designer dog breed.

But when it's all said and done, all dogs are welcomed in my home regardless of their breed, mixed or purebred.

I LOVE mutts! They are always so unique in their looks and they usually have the BEST personalities!

I have a soft spot for particular breeds as well, especially my pitties, but I really love mixes of those breeds. Boxers, bulldogs, pits, great danes, and german shepherd mixes are my favorites!

It probably is no surprise that our family prefers purebreeds, well Eskies anyway, although Nuka is a mix. Perhaps it is more accurate to say we love any pup that is healthy, has a gleam of life in its eyes, and is a good companion...and no pup, purebred or mixed, is more precious than one where you have had a personal hand in bringing those qualities back to life.

I've had and loved both, but I love everything about the Greyhounds and they happen to be the breed for me. I don't fault anybody for their decisions, but I guess we've just learned what works for us personally!
