Mommy Silver helping Zappa potty
Newborn puppies are not able to eliminate themselves on their own and the mother needs to stimulates this process by licking their glands in order to relieve themselves. Silver had ten puppies and as a new mom was having a hard time keeping up. The pups made a high pitched cry when they needed to go potty that was different than their other cries. I had read that the mother may need help and to take a slightly moisten tissue or cotton ball and rub their genitals until the could relieve themselves. It was a very awkward situation for me, but the puppies could die if they were not able to go potty, so as uncomfortable as it was, I did my best to help. The puppies would give a cry of relief when they were able to alleviate themselves which was very rewarding and helped in what was a bit strange situation.
By day four Silver gave me a little growl letting me know she could handle it from here. No argument there! She had no problem taking over at that point and soon Brut would also assist with the services.
How strange and beautiful nature works. As awkward as it was I didn't mind in the assistance. I was glad I was prepared and was able to help and be part of such an experience. I was also glad when Silver was able to take over, as I prefer for nature to take its course whenever possible. Sometimes what we find to be the most uncomfortable for us, brings the greatest help to someone else. Like a newborn puppy.

You have to think... it's just the doggie way of changing diapers! There's nothing awkward about that at all! You would need some helping changing diapers if you have just delivered... um... dixtuplets? lol Tentuplets? LOL I love the memories! I love talking about when Tootie came home from the "orphanage" or when I picked Amelia up from the airport! Now Charlie... his story is so long of chasing him through traffic and trying to figure out where he came from... I don't like his story, but I'm so glad I have him and he's part of our family now! <3
Wow! Thank you for sharing those beautiful moments and memories with us. We learned a thing or two about newborn pups and new moms. :))
Cheers,
Maxx and mommy
Thanks for sharing one of your special memories. :)
Good thing I don't remember anyone helping ME go potty! Teehee!

Woof! Woof! Precious Moments ... Golden Thanks for sharing. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar
What a great post! Nature is a beautiful thing!
You're just helping! Right now my chihuahua/mini doxie baby needs his butt wiped with witch hazel because it gets red and irritated after he poops! He loves it!
I'm his mom...it's the least I can do!
Well, your assistance was much nicer than my story of what I had to do over the weekend! :P I'm glad Silver was able to take them over eventually! :)
I love your stories!
Also, I just gave you an award on my blog... if you're interested you can check it out at: http://istillwantmorepuppies.blogspot.com/2011/06/too-many-awesome-pet-blogs-too-little.html
Isn't it funny that what other people would consider gross and unthinkable, we do so willingly for the dogs? I mean I'm sure it was awkward, but you did what you had to do.
I haven't had any puppy situations yet, but whenever Layla has a bathroom issue (not pee) I help her out. I'll spare the details, but I have to help out my little girl.
It's very cool to see nature take its course and watch mothers raise their babies.
newborns are precious stories... and i commend you for assisting even if it looks like it's awkward... nevertheless they can do it themselves... =)
Sweet memory and story. Any mother can use a little help now and then. :)

How sweet and funny that Silver decided she could handle it all on her own. It just proves that dogs are absolutely amazing. What a great momma she must be.
These memories are priceless! And educational. I simply cannot imagine being a mom to 10 demanding infants at once, Silver is amazing!
Anything to help the four footed ones out! Though I'm sure it was good when Silver took over helping too. :)
That's a nice memory. It's so precious to help a new mom handle her puppies.
And its not disgusting at all.
Wooo,
Togo, Tagar & Gamby
